Rachel Phillips Eve and Adam Eve and Adam, 2013

Catherine Couturier Gallery begins our 2013-2014 season with Field Notes, a solo exhibition by San Francisco Bay Area photographer Rachel Phillips. Inspired by the discovery of boxes full of old letters and postcards in her grandparent’s attic, Phillips explores the delicate balance between the domesticity of home life and the joy of wilderness in her Field Notes series. Origami houses, animals and silhouetted figures are assembled, photographed in natural settings, and printed onto vintage envelopes and letters collected from around the world and spanning over one hundred years.  While her photographic negatives may be used more than once, the individuality of the letters and envelopes onto which she prints makes each one of her pieces wholly unique.

Phillips began photography while completing her undergraduate degree at SkidmoreCollege.  In 2010, Field Notes was included in Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 50. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions and has been featured in numerous publications, including AmercanPhoto, B&W Magazine and LensWork. Most recently, Phillips completed an artist-in-residency at the RayKoPhotoCenter in San Francisco for the Summer of 2013.
