Marina Font Book "Anatomy Is Destiny" is on Pre-Sale Now.
PRE-SALE DEADLINE FEBRUARY 8, 2018
Anatomy is Destiny is the first monograph of Miami-based artist Marina Font. Her photo-based work explores ideas about identity, gender, territory, language, memory and the forces of the unconscious. The book’s title, stemming from Freud, also speaks to the ever-evolving understanding of gender and self-realization in the 21st century.
The unique pieces reproduced in Anatomy is Destiny stem from a single source photograph made by Font of a nude female figure. Reminiscent of Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, but with arms down and palms forward, the black and white photograph is both consistent and variant as Font renders each piece through application of embroidery, paint, yarn, and other materials. Through the rituals of these traditionally feminine practices, she, in her own words, “opens a dialogue between biology and psychology, our social and private persona” in the “evolving mutability” of womanhood.
The publication is being produced in collaboration with Dina Mitrani Gallery.
Born in Argentina in 1970, Font studied design at the Martin Malharro School of Visual Arts in Mar del Plata, Argentina and photography at the Speos Ecole de la Photographie in Paris. She completed her MFA in Photography from Barry University, Miami.
She has exhibited extensively in galleries, cultural institutions and museums nationally and internationally, with recent solo shows at The Boca Raton Museum of Art (with RPM Project), The Consulate General of Argentina in New York; and The Deering Estate at Cutler, Miami. Font is also part of two multidisciplinary collaborations: RPM Project (with Rhonda Mitrani and Patricia Schnall Gutierrez) and 9TOPICS (with Amalia Caputo).
Font was recently selected as one of the Top 50 portfolios through Photolucida’s Critical Mass, and is featured in a group show at the Griffin Museum. She also has a solo exhibition at Catherine Couturier Gallery in Houston, TX.
