Catherine Couturier Gallery is delighted to present our upcoming exhibition Within the Shadows, with artist Wendi Schneider. Schneider is an American artist widely known for her ongoing series of hand gilded photographs—States of Grace. Drawn to the serenity and transcendence she finds in the sinuous elegance of organic forms, she creates illuminated impressions of vanishing beauty in the natural world.
Returning to the foundational language of monochrome, Schneider's newest body of work reveals the light residing within the shadows, searching for the quiet luster which defines forms and hints at resilience. Born from the intimate experience of aging and a melancholia prompted by the seemingly eroding values of the world, Schneider's shifts in perception guide her to seek out spaces where opposing truths can coexist. Delicately layered gold leaf adds a touch of the sublime, transporting the viewer into a space where nuance governs and reality is mutable.
Light emerges as a guide in this work. It is a subtle shimmer sought within the shadows—a fragile constant that, even as vision softens and the world shifts, offers a presence that reveals, distorts, and sometimes consoles. The series is an exploration of the enduring power of luminescence—its profound capacity to offer respite through these essential values, both tonal and emotional, in a world yearning for illumination.
Schneider’s photographs are held in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The New Orleans Museum of Art, The Center for Creative Photography, The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, The Auburn University Library Special Collections, The Try-Me Collection, and The Asheville Art Museum, as well as numerous private collections. Her work has been published and exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions worldwide.
