Catherine Couturier Gallery is delighted to present our upcoming exhibition Through the Mist with gallery artist Susan Burnstine. Through the Mist features new works from Burnstine’s color series Where Shadows Cease alongside images from Iar Connacht, shot in the tranquil Irish countryside. Burnstine’s artistic practice has long been dedicated to exploring alternative processes within photography. Using twenty one self-made film cameras, primarily constructed with plastic, vintage camera parts, random household objects, and with single-element lenses molded from plastic and rubber, she captures distorted yet vivid images while relying on instinct and intuition.

On Iar Connacht, Burnstine states:

“Stepping into a realm where time seemingly stands still, mist-clad mountains merge with rolling hills and mirror-like lakes, creating an otherworldly ambiance. This visual ode to the past offers a captivating exploration of its enduring allure, capturing transcendent beauty and mythical allure of a truly extraordinary land.”

Susan Burnstine is an award winning fine art and commercial photographer originally from Chicago now based in Los Angeles. Burnstine has exhibited in galleries across the world, is widely published throughout the globe and has also written for several photography magazines, including a monthly column for Black & White Photography (UK). She was nominated for the 2009 Santa Fe Prize for Photography and winner of B&W Magazine's 2008 Portfolio Spotlight Award. Burnstine's first monograph, Within Shadows, published by CHARTA EDITIONS, was released in Europe at The Venice Biennale in June 2011 and later released in the U.S. in September 2011. Additionally, Within Shadows earned the Gold award for PX3 Prix De La Photographie Paris in the Professional Fine Art Books category and a Bronze overall. Burnstine's second monograph, Absence of Being, was released in September 2016 by Damiani Editore and earned Best In Show at The 2017 International PhotoBook Awards.
